FAQ: Job Search Essentials for Alumni

Job Search Essentials is offered exclusively for alumni. Whether you are working, living outside of the Hamilton area, or just need a little push in your job search, JSE is a great option. The program runs for 3 weeks, and is delivered through Avenue to Learn, McMaster's e-learning service. Each week covers a different aspect of the job search and features an assignment, sent to the instructor that will give you feedback on your resume, LinkedIn and Interview Skills.

How do I register?

Login to OSCARplus using your MacID. Once you have logged in, go to Events - Student Success Centre - you will see Job Search Essentials for Alumni. Select it, click register and then complete the Registration form fully and email it to perkinsj@mcmaster.ca.

Am I eligible?

To be eligible, you must have graduated in the last 10 years.

I am having trouble logging on to OSCARPlus. What do I do?

If you have not used your MacID in the last 6 months, and cannot log into OSCARplus, you will need to contact University Technology Services at uts@mcmaster.ca or 905-525-9140 x24357 and they can assist you with reactivating your MacID to access OSCARplus. You will need to know your student number, barcode number and date of birth.

I can log into OSCARplus, but why can't I see Job Search Essentials in the Event calendar?

If you recently graduated, it is possible that OSCARplus doesn't recognize your alumni status yet. The course is restricted to alumni, so if the system thinks you are still a student then it won't show you the program. Simply send an email to perkinsj@mcmaster.ca to register manually for the course. Please note: You will have to have logged in to OSCARplus first so that your record is imported.

Why is there a week delay between the end of registration and the start of the course?

Technology! In order to deliver this course online, and reach a global audience, we have partnered with UTS to make sure you have access to services like Avenue that you normally wouldn't have after graduation. This means that when registration closes, UTS begins their work to ensure you can access the course.

How much does this cost?

Nothing. Thanks to the Alumni Association and the Student Success Centre, Job Search Essentials is free.

How much time can I expect to spend on the course each week?

It varies, but expect to spend 5-10 hours on reviewing the course material and completing the weekly assignments.

How does the Week 3 Interview module work with feedback?

We will be using an online tool called Interview Streamwhich will allow the instructor to create a set of interview questions for the class. You will register for an account on Interview Stream, answer the questions using a webcam and then share the interview link with the instructor. The instructor will view the recording and provide you feedback through Interview Stream.

What if I don't want to complete the entire course, but just want to have my resume critiqued?

If you just want your resume critiqued, book an appointment at your convenience (in-person or phone/Skype). You can book appointments through OSCARplus or call the SSC front desk at 905.525.9140 ext. 24254. If you sign up for the course, please commit to completing it as there is limited availability.
